“Jai, after one year of my husband’s death, my parents and even my in-laws had pressed me for re-marriage. But I did not agree. But, I don’t know, for the first time, after meeting you, I am beginning to feel I should marry. And, mind you, if I marry, then I will marry you only. Otherwise, I can continue my life as I had passed all through these years” she said with a deep sigh.
“Sorry dear. As I said earlier, it is not going to work out. To me, at least, it is a utopian idea” I said.
She did not say anything further.
After breakfast, she led me to the drawing room. Without my asking, she took my papers and signed on the dotted lines. I noted she had not waited to hear from her advocate to know if she could sign the document or not any more. She called the driver and asked him to drop me at my house. I thanked her profusely.
It was a painful separation indeed. In spite of her best efforts not to show off any signs of pains and emotions, she looked at me the way a newly-wed bride would leave her soldier husband, the next morning after their bridal night, going to the warfront for the battle against the enemies.
“Jai, I would request you to visit me as frequently as you can. I believe you can do that, at least for my sake” she implored and beseeched me in a crying whisper.
“Let me try” I said fully aware of the fact that I was seeing the last of her as I had never kept relationship with any lady beyond my first experience, howsoever loving she might be. This was a principle I had always maintained as I did not want to create sentimental or emotional bondage with any woman in life than my wife.
Sitting at the backseat of the car, I looked through the window-glass. She was waving at me and I waved back. I could see her taking the pallu of her white sari and wiping her moistened eyes. I released a deep sigh of emotions to realize life is like that!
