“I think she fainted” Deepak said still trying to hold Niki’s limp body supported with his hands and kept leaned on his own body.
Within five seconds the two cars pulled up near us. The MD, the doctor and the nurse jumped out from inside. Though the entire scene and situation was a drama enacted by me and my friends Deepak and Manoj who took the roles of the drunkards, yet the MD screamed seeing my front completely drenched by red blood. I did not attempt to explain it was not my blood but red ink which was filled in small balloons kept hidden under my shirt and burst with my own hands whenever Manoj stabbed me with the dagger which was made of cardboard and covered with silver paper.
“Sir, don’t panic. I am quite fine” I said to him. Then turning to the doctor, I said “Doctor, please attend Niki pronto”
On his request, Deepak laid her on the road. We watched the doctor checking Niki with the stethoscope, taking her blood pressure as well as feeling her pulses. After three minutes or so, he stood up and said “She is okay, but seemed to have fainted”
“Are you sure she had not gone to a coma?” I asked with anxiety.
“Not exactly. May be a sort of. But I am sure she will come around within a couple of hours” I released a long sigh of relief when the doctor said it.
Helped by me, Deepak and Manoj carried Niki and made her lay on the backseat of the MD’s car. The nurse sat by her side with much difficulty to see Niki did not fall off the seat. The MD took the wheel. The doctor got into the second car. I beckoned my friends and they scrambled into the rear seat of my car and I took the driver’s seat. The three cars turned back and drove speedily. Within twelve minutes, we reached the MD’s bungalow. Deepak pushed us away and he carried Niki on his left shoulder. We entered the bungalow. Seeing us, the MD’s wife and the butler came running towards us nearly screaming. I told them there was nothing to worry and Niki was quite fine. We straight away went up the stairs and into Niki’s room. Deepak slowly laid her on the bed. The doctor checked her again and nodded to us “She is fine, but fainted. I am sure he will be fine in a couple of hours’ time”
I looked at the wall clock which showed the time was five minutes to midnight. I was keenly wishing the miracle to happen. If only it happened….
I asked all of them to sit and relax. It was going to be long wait. I asked the butler to prepare tea for all of us. The MD and his wife sat on the bed by Niki’s side looking at her with worried expressions on their faces. Often his wife moved her right hand on Niki’s legs.
Total silence prevailed which made the atmosphere eerie. The doctor checked her every fifteen minutes and gave us his same opinion.
At half past one, I stood up and went to the adjacent room belonging to the nurse. I quickly removed my clothes which were soaked with red ink. Then I put on new dresses brought in the suitcase. Keeping the old dresses packed in a polythene bag and keeping it in the suitcase, I came back to Niki’s room.
Fifteen minutes to two, I asked the doctor to check her again. While checking, I found the doctor’s face brightening up. He turned to me and said “She will come around soon, may be within another fifteen minutes”.
I requested the MD and his wife to move away from her bed. Then I went near the bed and bent forward to watch her face. Her face looked pale with her lips parted slightly.
I sat on the bed by her side. Then, I brought my hands forward. I placed my left thumb on her scalp behind her left ear and kept my right thumb on the scalp below her right ear. I rubbed the area for about thirty seconds. Then with my index finger I slightly hit at the middle point at the back of her head.
“Hey, what do you think you are doing?” the doctor asked me abruptly. He looked at me as if I was the most fantastic creature on two legs he had ever seen.
“Keep cool, doctor” I pacified him.
“Are you a doctor?” he asked a little furiously.
“I asked you to keep quiet” I said to him indignantly.
I placed my right palm over her forehead and massaged lightly. Then I called “Niki”.
There was no response.
“Niki, can you hear me?” I asked again.
Still there was no response.
I kept my right palm over her eyes now and rubbed lightly for fifteen seconds.
“Niki, you were in deep sleep. Now you are going to wake up” I told.
Still there was no response.
“Niki, can you hear me, you were in deep sleep, peaceful sleep. Now, you are going to wake up. You have to respond to me. And, now. Can you hear me?’
Suddenly all of us watched her lips moved a little. Then her eyelids, still closed, seemed to tremble as if fluttering.
“Hey, she is coming up” the doctor came rushing to the bed.
“Doctor, please, please, sit over there. Don’t disturb or interrupt me. This is applicable to all of you” I told him as well as turning to everybody in the room.
Looking back at Niki, I asked “Niki, can you hear me? Can you hear me now?”
“B-r-r-u-m-m” this sound came from her mouth.
“Can you hear me now clearly” I repeated.
“Y-y-e-e-s-s” she responded with her eyes still closed.
I looked around and waved my hand in a half-circle, signaling everybody to move and stand behind the cot, at the backside of her head, so that she could not see anybody. They obeyed as if I was the ring master and they were the circus animals.
Then I told her “Niki, you were in deep sleep. Now you are going to open your eyes and wake up”
I found her eyelids trembling again. I asked the butler to bring a glass of water immediately. He rushed out.
“Niki, do you feel difficulty to open your eyes. Or, are your eyelids heavy?”
“Yes” this time she told clearly.
“Okay. I will help you to open your eyes” I said and rubbed my fingers again on her both eyes.
“Do you feel relaxed now?” I asked.
“Yes” she replied.
The butler returned with the water. I inserted my fingers into the glass, made them wet and rubbed on Niki’s eyelids. Then I moved down and pulled the third finger on her left foot for a few times.
“Now you are going to open your eyes…slowly…slowly…very slowly…do it, Niki” I said.
The eyelids fluttered again. Then to my greatest delight they slowly began to open up. The way the full moon came out from behind a thick dark cloud, her eyelids opened up slowly and within ten seconds she fully opened her eyes. The first person she saw was me. There was a sudden, never before seen expression on her face now. I watched her observing me from head to my waist.
“Niki. I am your father’s friend. Do you know me?”
“No” she said.
“Sure? Haven’t you seen me before?” I asked.
“No. I have not seen you ever before” this time she replied in complete sentence.
I was quick to notice a sign of puzzle and surprise on her face which corroborated her statement that she had never seen me before.
I beckoned her mother standing behind to come around to her front.
“Do you know who this lady is?” I asked.
“M-m-u-u-m-m-y-y……Mummy….Mummy!” All the hairs on my body stood erect suddenly and bristled violently when she told this. I knew instantly the miracle did happen. My wish came true. My efforts yielded fruitful and desired result. I became sure Niki became completely cured and perfectly alright.
What followed was a heartening and emotional scene which filled the eyes of everybody in the room including me.
“Niki…my loving daughter” MD’s wife cried loudly. Extending both her hands she nearly fell on Niki hugging her tightly. I watched Niki also embracing her mother. The MD’s wife kissed Niki affectionately all over her face.
“Why are you crying, Mummy?” Niki asked her.
“Niki, please wait” I said and beckoned the MD to come around now.
“Who is this man, Niki?” I asked.
“Papa…Papa” Niki called loudly now.
The great man could not suppress his emotions or himself. He rushed forward hugging his daughter. “My dear daughter…my dear Niki…my Niki” he started kissing all over her face while crying loudly.
My eyes suddenly moistened to see the emotional re-union of the parents with their daughter.
“Niki…wait” I said to her and signaled the doctor and butler to come around now. Pointing to the doctor, I asked her “Who is this, Niki?”
“Doctor uncle” she said with a smile.
Bringing the butler forward, I asked “Who is this man, Niki?” I asked.
“Ramu Chacha” she said with a smile.
The butler burst into tears. In fact, all of them were weeping and shedding tears of great happiness and joy!
Now, there was one more test left.
I called Leena, the nurse forward and asked Niki “Who is she?”
I watched Niki observing her carefully. Lastly she told “I don’t know her”
The hairs on my nape stood erect and bristled violently again. I knew for sure Niki became totally fine. She recognized all members of the family quickly but failed to recognize both me and the nurse whom she never knew after the catastrophe following her husband’s murder.
I stood up, walked and sat on the sofa. Suddenly I felt tired, as I had never felt so tired ever before.
To my pleasant delight and surprise, pointing her finger at me, I heard Niki asking the MD “Papa, who is this gentleman? I had never seen him before. Is he your friend? He was asking me a lot of questions trying to identify you and others as if I had never recognized all of you before!”
“Niki, my daughter, he is not my friend. He is our God! He is our savior! He is everything to us!” he replied emotionally while crying.
“Our God? Our saviour? What do you mean, Papa? I could not understand. What is happening around? Why are you all staring at me as if I am a wild animal out of the zoo? Why all of you are crying? Did anything happen to me?” she shot an array of questions.
As the MD was about to open his mouth to reply, I rushed forward and signaled him to keep quiet. “Sir, please don’t tell her anything. The remaining part is to be handled by my friend Dr. Srini. I am not sure and confident to handle it of my own” I said.
Realizing, I need to tell something to answer briefly to her questions as well as to put her mind in rest, I turned to Niki and said “Niki, please relax and take it very lightly. Nothing serious happened to you or any of us. You had suffered some mental disturbances. But with your parent’s blessings, you have become alright now. I was only helping you and your parents. We are all happy you became fine now. These tears you see in everybody’s eyes are tears of joy and happiness. Tomorrow morning, my doctor friend will arrive and he will make you hundred percent alright.
“What is your name?” she asked me inquisitively.
“Hmmmmm…” I hesitated then told her “Does the name Jairaj mean anything to you?”
“No. I am hearing that name for the first time in my life. Is your name Jairaj?”
I became sure and confident. “Yes, that is my name” I replied.
“Thank you, Mr. Jairaj, for helping me and my parents. I am obliged to you” she said.
Suddenly, the MD stood up. In an overwhelming emotional gesture, he lay in front of me catching both my legs. I was totally embarrassed! I hurriedly bent down and helped him stand up. “Hey, what are you doing, Sir? You are behaving like a child” I said.
He hugged me tightly and started to cry again “Jai, my dear Jai, you are our God. You saved our child. We are indebted to you and we will worship you for the rest of our lives” he said while sobbing inconsolably. His wife also came and stood by his side.
“Think nothing of it, Sir. She became alright because of your blessings only. I and my friends Deepak and Manoj were only instrumental. Nothing more, nothing short” I told with a choked voice.
Then holding his right palm in a handshake, I said “Heartiest congratulations to you and your wife, Sir. Your daughter is perfectly fine now. My friend Srini will handle the rest of it tomorrow”
I asked the butler to give a glass of water to Niki to drink as well as to make tea for her and us too. Then as if speaking to everybody in the room, I said “It is a matter for great rejoice. Let us celebrate it over a cup of tea”.
Everybody smiled at my proposition. “Sure, Jai” the MD said quickly.
Niki accepted the glass of water and drank it of her own. Then we had tea together. I looked up at the clock and told to the MD “Sir, if you don’t mind, let us leave now. I shall come back tomorrow with Dr. Srini around 11.45 in the morning”
He wanted to speak but the words just won’t come out of his emotionally chocked throat. I patted at his back. Saying goodnight and good-bye to Niki and all others, I, Deepak and Manoj left the room. The doctor asked me if he could also leave and I said that he could also go now.
“Sir, please don’t disturb her. Let her sleep peacefully” I requested the MD.
“Sure, Jai, as you say” he replied.
Suddenly, Niki sat up and came out of the bed “Mr. Jairaj, if my parents had told the truth that you saved my life, I should at least come to the door to see you off till tomorrow”
I smiled at her. Then I extended my right hand towards her. Without any hesitation, she caught and held my hand. Together, hand in hand, we walked down the stairs while others followed us. We came out of the front door. She gave a peck on my right cheek as a sign of her affection and gratitude. I too kissed gently on her forehead. Then I and my friends got into my car. We waved at them and drove off. I dropped Deepak and Manoj at their respective places and thanked them profusely for all they have done to me to save the girl. Then I reached my house and fell on the bed. I thought I would not be able to sleep though it was going to be dawn soon. But I was wrong. Once I lay on the bed, soon I slipped into deep sleep.
I woke up at nine in the morning hearing my mobile phone ringing continuously. It was the MD. I wished him good morning. He told they had spent another thirty minutes with Niki then asked her to sleep. But the couple could not sleep at all; rather they were thrilled with joy and happiness. Niki got up at seven in that morning of her own. She behaved quite normally as she was before her marriage. He quickly added she had remembered her husband’s violent death and wept for a few minutes. However, she recouped soon afterwards. I was happy to hear that.
He said he would send his car to my place around 10 o’clock to go to the airport. I thanked him and we hung up. Then I remembered I had not called Srini to inform the news of the miracle and her sudden recovery. Though I could take an excuse it was past midnight so I had thought not to disturb and wake him up yet he was most likely to fire me left and right.
I went to the toilet. I was ready within thirty minutes. My breakfast arrived from the nearby hotel. Five minutes to ten, the MD’s driver arrived. I went out with him locking the front door. We reached the airport at eleven. The flight arrived in time. I had a little difficulty to recognize Srini among the passengers coming out. He had changed a lot in his physical appearance. He sported a grey beard and he had kept his hairs long almost reaching his nape. He looked more like a nuclear scientist than a psychiatrist. We greeted each other.
“Srini, there is big, happy news! The miracle did happen yesterday night itself. The girl recovered and became alright. The trick and drama worked exactly the way we had heavily banked on”
“Oh, that is great news, Jai. Heartiest congratulations. All credit goes to you. Now, you have become a psychiatrist though not professionally qualified. Man! Am I jealous of you?!”
“Thank you, Srini. But the kudos goes to you only. I don’t like others’ children calling me Daddy. If it was not for your moral support, encouragement and courage given to me, I would not have ventured to do the drama” I was being honest in my expressions”
“No, Jai, you are completely wrong. You deserve all the credits for the success. It was you who have handled and done it. My heartiest congrats once again” he paused and looked at me suspiciously “You bloody bustard! You just told me she became alright yesterday night itself. Then why didn’t you give me a ring to convey this happy news?”
He blasted at me exactly the way I had expected. With much difficulty, I cooled him down explaining everything.
We reached the MD’s house around twelve. The MD, his wife and Niki welcomed us. I introduced Srini to everybody. Srini congratulated me in front of the MD for the great success of my efforts. The MD too praised me sky high. He led us to a bedroom on the ground floor for Srini. He moved in. Within half an hour, he took a bath and came out wearing white spotless pyjama and kurta. All of us had lunch together and we talked too. Later, I, Srini and Niki went to her bedroom. I closed the door. As requested by Srini, Niki lay on the bed on her back. Srini applied hypnotism and within four minutes, she went into deep sleep as if she was administered anesthesia. He did it with ease and élan. After all, he was an expert and professional in his field. While I sat on the sofa, I watched Srini asking her several questions and her answering them. After twenty minutes or so, he gave several hypnotic suggestions to fix her conscious and unconscious minds at their respective places with separate identities and entities of personalities. Then he took another ten minutes to wipe out the second personality from her mind. He gave more suggestions so that they never got inter-mingled. After ten minutes, he brought her back from the sleep.
Turning to me, he said “Jai, she has become quite fine now. I should not sound boasting, but it was a very easy job for me. In fact, you made it easier and facilitating. Thank you and congrats, once again” he said patting on my left shoulder.
He looked at Niki who came out of the bed now “Congrats, Niki, you are perfectly alright now. Now, you know you had suffered a serious mental shock following or witnessing the brutal murder of your husband in front of your eyes. In fact, you had lost your memory for nearly two years. Nothing will happen to you now” he said to her.
We all went down the stairs and reached the drawing room. Srini took the MD and his wife to his room and explained everything to them. He suggested he could return by tomorrow’s evening flight. I and Srini retired to his room for rest. After the evening tea, we went out for a stroll. At half-past eight, he again hypnotized Niki and gave her more hypnotic suggestions. As per Srini’s suggestion and MD’s request, I decided to stay there. I drove back to my house and brought a few clothes for my change. After dinner, we went to sleep.
In the morning, the MD confirmed the booking of ticket for Srini’s return flight to Bangalore. Once in the morning and secondly in the afternoon, he gave hypnotic suggestions to Niki. Srini was fully convinced she can not go back. At four o’clock, he got ready and took the couple to his room. He had a private talk with them, of course in my presence. He advised the MD to bring Niki to Bangalore after a month. He added and assured that after that visit, Niki would be ready for the second marriage. That was the second most heartening and happiest news for the couple.
Later, on his request, Niki joined us. He talked to her for nearly two minutes in presence of her parents. Then he shook hands with the MD. Then the MD took an envelope from his pocket and extended his hand toward Srini.
“What is this, Sir? My fees?” he was always sarcastic.
“No. A symbolic gesture of our deep gratitude and obligation” the MD said.
“Then Jai deserved this” he said.
“I will do it separately to him too” he replied and added “This is a blank cheque. You can fill any amount” the MD said.
“You should not make me feel ashamed; Sir” Srini refused to accept it and he looked determined “I and Jai are great pals. If I did anything if Jai asked, how can I accept a fee? Sorry, Sir, please don’t make me pained” he said with a firm voice.
The MD looked at me for help. I accepted the envelope from his hand. I took out the cheque and wrote the amount box with thirty-five thousand rupees covering his flight tickets and other expenses. Then I kept the cheque back in the cover and slid it into Srini’s shirt pocket. Sri resisted vehemently.
Rubbing my right fist on his nose, I blasted “Hey, you punk, I will smash your nose”
That was too much for Srini. We all laughed at the humour. Though the couple and Niki insisted to come with us to the airport to see Srini off, he thankfully refused their kind gesture. He shook hands with everyone including the butler. All of us came out of the bungalow. Before getting into the MD’s car, Sri patted on Niki’s left cheek “See you at Bangalore after a month”.
“Sure, doctor. I look forward to it with pleasure” she replied with a smile.
The car sped off. Within forty minutes we reached the airport. It was almost time for him to check-in.
While we shook hands for the goodbye gesture, I told “What should I say to you, Srini? I am sorry, I could not find words. Am I indebted to you?”
He laughed loudly. Then he raised his right leg and gave a kick at my asses “Tell that to the dogs. And goodbye, Jai. Remember me to Bhabhiji, your wife”
We waved at each other. I watched him till he disappeared to the check-in area.
The driver dropped me at my house. I again went back to my bed and lay on my back.
“Uuufffffff……a great work accomplished successfully” I told to myself but in a loud voice!
The wheels of time turned speedily. We didn’t realize how quickly days, weeks and months flew quickly.
While Srini kept the one month old baby son of Niki on his laps while attending the baby’s naming ceremony, he looked at me. Knowing what he wanted to say, I nodded. Twenty months had passed since Niki had recovered. A month later of her becoming fine, the couple took her to Srini at Bangalore. After two sittings and counseling, Niki agreed for re-marriage. Two months later, her marriage was solemnized with the son of the MD’s friend who was also the MD of another company. I and Srini had attended the marriage at Delhi. The couple lived happily. One year and four months later, Niki gave birth to a baby boy. The MD had invited both me and Srini to attend the naming ceremony of the baby. After the puja and other rituals, the baby was placed on the laps of Srini. Then the MD gladly announced the name of the baby as ‘Srijai’. Nobody needed any explanation that the name Srijai was made coining together the first-names of Srinivas and Jairaj. We blessed the baby and the proud parents – Niki and her husband.
